Hajj: A Step By Step Timeline
Millions around the world have been undertaking Hajj each year since the migration of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Madina to Makkah. For anyone preparing to go, it’s an incredibly exciting time but of course a deeply spiritual, serious and important period of our lives. The timeline below helps you understand the different aspects of the holy pilgrimage.
What happens on this day?
If you are performing Hajj al-Tamattu, you will do the following:
- Purify yourself,
- Wear the Ihram,
- Perform two Rakats of Salah,
- Make your Niyyah for Hajj and recite Talbiyah, preferably at Masjid al-Haram,
- Proceed to Mina before Dhuhr,
- Recite the Talbiyah frequently,
- Perform your Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha at Mina,
- Stay there overnight,
If you are performing Hajj al-Ifrad or Hajj al-Qiran, you will do the following:
- Proceed to Mina before Dhuhr,
- Recite the Talbiyah frequently,
- Perform your Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha at Mina,
- Stay there overnight,
- As soon as you enter your tent, claim your position within the tent by throwing down your mat
- Don’t spend too much time discussing worldly affairs in your tent
- If you have a choice, don’t choose a tent near the toilets or a cooking area

Jeddah
Jeddah is the airport most Pilgrims will arrive into Saudi Arabia
Makkah
Makkah is considered the spiritual center of Islam because it was where the Prophet Mohammed is said to have received his first revelations in the early 7th century. At its heart is the cube-shaped Kabah, built by Ibrahim and his son Ishmael, according to the Quran.
Kabah
The Kabah is a stone building in the court of the Great Mosque at Mecca that contains a sacred black stone and is the goal of Islamic pilgrimage and the point toward which Muslims turn in praying.
Mount Safa and Marwah
ocated in the long galley that is a part of Masjid Al-Haram, Safa and Marwa are two small historical hills which are connected to the larger mountains, Abu Qubays and Qaiqan in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Safa and Marwa are an integral part of the religious acts of Hajj and Umrah as Muslim pilgrims are commanded to walk between the two hills in order to commemorate Bibi Hajar’s (AS) commitment to her son, Prophet Ismail (AS).
Madinah
Madina, the sacred city of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is the light of every Muslim’s life. It is the second holiest city in Islam after Makkah and is the place where Masjid-e-Nabawi is situated.
Quba
The Quba Mosque is a mosque located on the outskirts of Medina, Saudi Arabia. Initially, the mosque was built 6 kilometres off Medina in the village of Quba, before Medina expanded to include this village.
